Dear President Bush,
I support Israel, and I abhor the terrorist attacks
to which it has been subjected.
I deeply believe that the Jewish State will only know
true security once it reaches a peace agreement that allows Israelis and
Palestinians to separate in order for two viable states to live side by side.
For this reason I am very concerned that the Government of Israel is continuing
to make a critical mistake by expanding existing settlements and allowing new
settlements to be established (34 since the most recent Israeli election).
I urge you to convince Prime Minister Sharon to stop
settlement construction consistent with the Mitchell Committee Report, and to
evacuate settlements from all of Gaza and as much of the West Bank as possible.
Such a withdrawal would allow Israel to solidify its lines of defense and
provide real security for its people.
I also urge you to convince the leaders of the
Palestinians and other Arab countries to make every effort to fight terrorism.
Finally, I urge you to press both Israel and the Palestinians
to make the compromises necessary to end the violence and return to
negotiations. This means praising either side when it embraces peace and
criticizing either side when it shuns it. I recognize that such an effort will
face enormous obstacles over a long period of time. Nonetheless, for Israel’s
sake, I urge you to stay actively engaged in finding solutions - solutions that
Americans Jewry, no less than the general American public, will embrace.
Sincerely,
